WHAT ARE STRUCTURAL CONSTELLATIONS?

Fragment of the book ABC of Constellations with a Solution-Focused Approach

DEFINITION

What is it?

Simulation process that can be performed by a group of people or with objects.
It is a way of proceeding with which the really relevant elements of the system to be represented are represented in space, which were mentioned in a previous conversation, and in this way both relationship structures, behaviors and tendencies to change of this system are simulated . In this way they can, for example, when asked about the resolution of a conflict in a team, be represented as elements of the system: team members, company directors, the company itself, objectives and clients through representatives. We can also work on personal, family or couple issues.

FOCUSED ON SOLUTIONS

What do we focus on?

1) Proceed towards the solution: the methodology of intervention and conversation management that is based on the ideas and principles of the Milwaukee School (Steve de Shazer, Insoo Kim-Berg) and on the characteristics of the solution they are more relevant than those of the problem. In this way, it is oriented to the clients to describe their possibilities of solution in such a way as if the solution had already happened. In this way they live wider spaces of action and new perspectives.

WE ARE SYNTATIC

Process

2) Syntactic Proceed: Systemic Structural Constellations are based on the logical and philosophical assumptions of fundamental system theories. Through them there are general structures that make it possible to leave aside to a large extent the content interpretations, especially by the facilitators of the constellation. Thus, in the case of a decision dilemma, there will always be at least two possibilities for decision-making, but beyond this, unnoticed compatibilities and contextual conditions not taken into account may also play a role. The exploration of the content of these diverse perspectives and their evaluation is left to the clients.

AMBIGUITY TOLERANCE

Attitude in the Approach

3) Systemically ambiguous attitude: A form of intervention in which the symbols used are intentionally and systemically ambiguous so that the client can approach several systemic contexts at the same time (for example, family and work context) and the clients themselves can perform a selection regarding which topics can be openly addressed at work and which should only be covered covertly with increased protection.

SYSTEMIC ATTITUDE

Tolerance of ambiguity

3) Proceed systemically ambiguous: A form of intervention in which the symbols used are intentionally and systematically ambiguous so that several systemic contexts (for example, family and work context) can be touched for clients at the same time and clients themselves can make a selection regarding which topics can be openly addressed at work and which should only be covered covertly with increased protection.

THE REPRESENTATIVE PERCEPTION

The Representatives

4) Representatives are named and placed by clients, for example, as a family member, boss, or also totally undercover and only named with one letter. They spontaneously experience bodily and foreign perceptions that are in accordance with structures and tendencies of change of a represented system. Representative perception is the ability of the human being to project with the image of a constellation the quality of the position and the relationship of the elements of the system represented through the spontaneous change of body perception.
